In 2014, you helped The Talking Farm launch its first full growing season, positioning the Howard Street Farm as the only full-production urban farm in Skokie and the largest in northern Cook County. Now that we are able to distribute produce grown right on the Howard Street Farm, we are growing at a rapid pace. As we grow, the demands on our resources grow too. Your help now is as important as it has ever been.

More than ever, we serve as the community’s primary source for hands-on farming education, and have expanded and diversified our educational efforts in 2014. We’re now managing, year-round, the Evanston Township High School Edible Acre project, teaching ETHS students hands-on about local food by growing thousands of pounds of produce for use in the school cafeteria. Over 25 corporate, school and community groups participated in our popular work day program, learning about urban farming by getting their hands dirty at the Howard Street Farm. We ran a summer camp garden at Lincoln Jr. High in Skokie, and built a school garden for Edison Elementary in Morton Grove. We enrolled new participants in our Talking FarmHand certification program, and developed a curriculum with Skokie’s Tot Learning Center. We provided four farm interns this year with intensive, hands-on training in urban agriculture.

Because of these accomplishments, our growth is outpacing our resources. In order to meet the high demand for our produce, we need infrastructure (specifically, a food processing shed and irrigation) to help Farmer Matt expand and develop the Howard Street Farm. In addition, we remain in need of critical staffing to maintain our urban agriculture educational and training programs at their current level.

If you believe in The Talking Farm’s mission to improve the local food system through hands-on educational opportunities, act now! Please give today as generously as you can. Every donation you make helps our community farm thrive. You may send a check payable to The Talking Farm, P.O. Box 6329, Evanston, Illinois  60204, or you may donate online easily and securely at thetalkingfarm.donortools.com. Your gift is tax-deductible to the extent allowable under the law.

On behalf of everyone at The Talking Farm, we thank you deeply for your continuing support and loyalty.
