It’s Winter on The Talking Farm

The soil is resting and regenerating under its blanket of snow. Underneath the snow, cover crops and tarps are helping protect the soil life and health, that we work hard during the year to build up, during winter’s harsh weather. Farmers Matt and Susanna get to slow down a bit as well, although the work never ends on a farm. Winter is a time to plan, order supplies, learn and bank some energy.  Matt and Susanna are attending conferences, networking, and planning for the upcoming  growing season and educational programs.

This year marks the fourth year of vegetable production on the farm and we’re looking forward to trialing new varieties of crops this year, including hops! This season, The Talking Farm will continue to sell its organically grown produce to restaurants, Local Foods, the Evanston and Skokie Farmers Markets, and our members via our membership program.

The Talking Farm has big plans for this year and next: we are beginning development of the Western Fields in order to expand our farming operation and put more land into production.  In addition to new fields and hoop houses, with the assistance of the University of Illinois, we are going to build a pond in order to help manage water use and run-off, and add a critical permaculture element to our ecosystem. Needless to say, we will be raising money and seeking donations in order to continue the Farm’s expansion and operations.  Our volunteers and interns, without whom we would not survive, will be busy in 2018!  The additional growing land will enable us to provide more opportunities to develop our next generation of urban farmers and distribute more locally, sustainably produced food to our community.

As the days begin to lengthen, one can’t help but think about Spring.  It will not be too long before Matt and Susanna get back out to the farm in order to prepare beds and begin growing fresh salad greens in our season extending hoop houses.  Remember to come to The Talking Farm for your seedlings in April, and if the new tax scheme leaves you with a few extra dollars, please consider a donation to The Talking Farm.  Also, we are accepting new members for the 2018 season and will be sending out information regarding vegetable box sign-ups soon. Volunteer opportunities will also be starting in late March – early April. Check out our calendar and come during our open hours, prepared to volunteer. For groups, email info@thetalkingfarm.org to schedule a group workday.
