In June 2011, The Talking Farm signed a Use Agreement with the Skokie Park District that gives us access to a two-acre site near the Evanston-Skokie border on Chicago’s North Shore.

This is our beautiful “land home” – the Howard Street Farm!

The site is former farmland located at 3669 Howard Street in Skokie, Illinois, west of the intersection at Howard Street and McCormick Boulevard. We share the property with the Skokie Park District’s Tot Learning Center, a daycare facility for children ages 2 to 5.

The Talking Farm is using the land to grow fresh produce applying sustainable agricultural practices such as crop rotation, companion planting, mulching, natural biocides, and non-petroleum-based fertilizers. It’s also where we will offer classes in growing, preserving, and enjoying local foods; and to conduct research relevant to urban farming.

Produce from the Farm is available to local restaurants, farmers’ markets, schools, food pantries, and individuals.

The Howard Street Farm is a very busy place! The first phase of our plan, completed in 2012, included establishing a 10,000-square-foot raised bed Demonstration Garden and in-ground production fields. Additional plans include a small fruit orchard and agro-forest, fences for vertical growing, composting, and additional hoop houses for season extension.
